Cardboard Castle for Rabbits and Cats

Your rabbit or cat can be king of the castle in this fun house!

Materials Needed:

  • Two cardboard packing boxes, one larger than the other and both big enough for your pet to fit in comfortably. If you don't have any boxes at home, you can try your local Bunnings Warehouse or hardware store, or maybe your local supermarket will have spare boxes available.
  • Paper based masking tape or non toxic glue
  • Scissors or a craft knife
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  1. Using your pencil, draw on your boxes for where you would like to cut out windows and doors. Remember that the door holes need to be big enough for your pet to get through so they can enter their castle. You can put windows on each side if you like and maybe even draw out a back door if the castle isn't going to be pushed up against a wall.
  2. Ask an adult to get started on cutting out the doors and windows. Depending on how thick your cardboard is, you can probably finish cutting them out with a sturdy pair of scissors.
  3. The top box is open at the top so your pet can climb in and out, so you can cut the edges into zig zags or the square shaped pattern you see on real castles (also called merlons and crenels).
  4. Using your tape of non-toxic glue, stick your smaller box on top of the larger box like in the picture and put some toys, treats or bedding into the castle to entice your pet in
  5. It's best to not stick things onto your castle as decoration in case your pet pulls them off and chews them, but you could use some non-toxic markers or wooden pop sticks to make your new castle look a bit fancy.

TIP: you don't have to stick to just two boxes for your cardboard castle creations. You can add multiple boxes, cut connecting doors between them or even have multiple floors with trap doors in between!
