Plaited fleece toy

Fleece is an excellent fabric to use for animal toys. It's washable, doesn't fray at the edges and it copes well with enthusiastic throwing and pulling.

Our cats and dogs love these easy-to make plaited toys which are so simple, you don't even need to do any sewing!

Parents: It is your responsibility to ensure that this project and this toy are appropriate for your child and your pet.

Equipment needed:

  • Fleece fabric, you will use 3 different colours or patterns per toy
  • Scissors
  • Something heavy, like a big book

Method:

  1. Cut your fleece into strips about 2 to 3 cms wide and 45 cm long. You will need 6 strips for each toy, two from each fabric
  2. Lay the strips down one on top of the other and tie a knot close to the end, pulling it nice and tight. Leave a little bit hanging out as this will form a little tassel.
  3. Lay your strips with the knot onto a flat surface and place your 'something heavy' on top of the knot. This will keep your toy in place so you can plait the remaining fabric.
  4. Divide remaining strips into 3 groups of two strips
  5. Alternating left and right sides, take the outside strip to the middle to form your plait. This diagram shows you how to plait.

             6. Plait to nearly the end of the fabric strips then tie in a secure knot, leaving another tassel on the end

Notes:

  • Make sure your end knots are tight so your toy doesn't unravel
